How do I fully exit an app?

You may occasionally have the need to fully exit an app. There are several reasons you may need to do this, including:

  • Freeing RAM memory currently being used by apps you aren't actively using.
  • If the game is stuck in a bad state and you think that maybe relaunching the app will help. If you're going to try relaunching, you should first fully exit the app to get rid of as much of the bad state as possible.

tvOS (Apple TV)

  1. Double-press the Home button (the one with a television icon). This will bring up a "carousel" that shows all of your running apps if you swipe sideways.
  2. In the carousel, scroll left and right to find the app you wish to exit. Then swipe upwards on an app to completely exit it. The app should disappear from the carousel if you've done it correctly.

iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)

iOS 7 and later

(Note: These instructions use the Triple Town app as an example, but this technique should work for any app.)

  1. Start from the device's Home Screen--where you can see all the little icons for launching various apps. If you're not currently there, you get there by pressing the Home button (the main button on your device) once, which will minimize the current app.

Earlier than iOS 7

  1. Start from the device's Home Screen--where you can see all the little icons for launching various apps. If you're not currently there, you get there by pressing the Home button (the main button on your device) once, which will minimize the current app.
  2. Double-press the Home button (the main button on your device) to open the "app tray" that shows all of your running apps if you swipe it sideways.
  3. In the app tray, touch and hold the icon for one of the apps until the icons start shaking and little red circles appear in the upper-left of the icons.
  4. Touch the little red circle of the app you want to completely exit.
  5. Press the Home button once to stop the shaking.
  6. Press the Home button once to close the app tray.

Android

Either of these two methods should work:

Force Stopping the app

Please follow the directions here for Force Stopping an app.

Exiting from the Task Manager / Recent Apps List (Android 4.0 and higher)

Android 4.0 introduced the Task Manager / Recent Apps List. Apps can be fully exited from here.

(Note: These instructions use the Triple Town app as an example, but this technique should work for any app.)

  1. Bring up the Task Manager / Recent Apps List. There are different ways to do this on different devices; if your device isn't covered, email support@spryfox.com and we can try to figure out how to do it on your device.
    • On the Samsung Galaxy S4, hold down the Home button for a few seconds. The Task Manager should come up.
    • On the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Google Nexus 7, press the Recent Apps button. The Recent Apps List should come up.
